Making living with dentures easy and comfortable

Your dentures were made to fit you precisely and, if they are cared for properly, they do not change shape.

But you may sometimes find that they can become loose due to natural changes in the gums and bone supporting them. As the jawbone begins to shrink, so do the gums.

If you find your dentures no longer fit properly, see your dentist as soon as possible so adjustments can be made.

Trying to change the fit of your dentures yourself can damage them and make them unrepairable so this would be a costly experiment!

Ill-fitting dentures repaired at home can also irritate the gums, tongue and cheeks.

In an emergency, you could use denture adhesives to keep the dentures stable until you are able to see the dentist.

Even if you no longer have your natural teeth, it’s still important to see your dentist regularly for an oral examination.

The dentist will examine your mouth to check for any problem with the gum ridges, the tongue and the joints of the jaw, as well as screen for oral cancer.

For a variety of reasons, many older adults are more susceptible to oral diseases, including oral cancer. About 95 percent of all cancers are found in people over age 40. However, many of these cancers are treatable if detected early.

Oral tissues are also checked for signs of other diseases that can first manifest themselves in the mouth.

Living with dentures can be comfortable if you continue to care for your oral hygiene and make regular visits to your dentist for a checkup.

Cosmetic dentistry for seniors: How older adults can benefit from dental makeovers

Cosmetic dentistry isn't just for young adults looking to improve their smiles. In fact, older adults can benefit just as much from dental makeovers. As we age, our teeth and gums undergo changes that can affect the appearance of our smile. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry can help address these changes and improve the overall appearance of a smile. Here's how older adults can benefit from cosmetic dentistry.

  • Teeth Whitening: Teeth can become discolored or stained over time, making them look yellow or gray. Teeth whitening can help remove these stains and brighten the smile. Many older adults opt for teeth whitening as a way to rejuvenate their smile and achieve a more youthful appearance.

  • Dental Implants: Missing teeth can be a common problem for older adults, and dental implants can provide a permanent solution. Dental implants look and function like natural teeth, and they can help restore confidence and improve the overall appearance of a smile.

  • Dentures: For older adults who are missing several teeth, dentures can provide a more affordable solution than dental implants. Dentures can be customized to fit the individual's mouth, and they can improve the appearance of the smile while also restoring function to the mouth.

  • Veneers: Veneers can be used to correct a variety of cosmetic issues, such as chips, cracks, and stains. They can also be used to fill in gaps between teeth and improve the overall appearance of the smile.

Cosmetic dentistry isn't just for young adults. Older adults can benefit just as much from dental makeovers, as cosmetic dentistry can help address the changes that occur in the teeth and gums over time. From teeth whitening to dental implants, dentures, and veneers, there are a variety of cosmetic dental procedures that can help seniors achieve a more youthful, confident smile. If you're an older adult who is looking to improve the appearance of your smile, talk to your dentist about your options for cosmetic dentistry.

Making the most of your smile

Your smile is a major factor in the impression people get when they meet you.

And the good news is that you now don’t have to settle for a smile spoiled by stained, chipped, or misshapen teeth.

Advances in dental treatment mean there is a wide range of choices to help you get the smile that you want. Here are some of the options:
– Tooth whitening (bleaching) can help brighten teeth that have become discolored or stained. It can be done in the dental office or with a system the dentist can give you to use at home
– Bonding improves the appearance of teeth that have become chipped, broken, cracked or stained. This is done by bonding tooth-colored materials to the tooth surface
– Enamel shaping involves modifying teeth to improve their appearance by removing or contouring enamel
– Veneers are thin custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. They are used to treat spaces between teeth and teeth that are chipped, stained or poorly shaped.
– Braces may be needed if teeth are crooked, crowded or do not meet properly – and not just for kids

Even small changes can have a big impact on your smile and so make a huge difference to how you look and how you feel about yourself.

If you’d like an even better smile, your dentist will be able to give you information about the options available.

The facts about oral cancer

Oral cancer is not as well known as other types of cancer but it can represent a life-threatening risk if not identified early.

– It strikes an estimated 35,000 Americans each year
– More than 7,500 people (5,200 men and 2,307 women) die of these cancers each year
– More than 25% of Americans who get oral cancer will die of the disease
– On average, only half of those diagnosed with the disease will survive more than five years
– African-Americans are especially vulnerable; the incidence rate is 1/3 higher than whites and the mortality rate is almost twice as high

Although the use of tobacco and alcohol are risk factors in developing oral cancer, approximately 25% of oral cancer patients have no known risk factors.

There has been a nearly five-fold increase in incidence in oral cancer patients under age 40, many with no known risk factors.

The incidence of oral cancer in women has increased significantly, largely due to an increase in women smoking. In 1950 the male to female ratio was 6:1; by 2002, it was 2:1.

The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid tobacco and alcohol use.

Unusual red or white spots can form in and around the mouth. These are often harmless but they can be cancerous or pre-cancerous.

Identifying and removing these early enough is a major factor in reducing the incidence of cancer.

So knowing the risk factors and seeing your dentist for regular examinations can help prevent this deadly disease.

Braces: How can it made you to look good

Orthodontic appliances such as braces can be used to help straighten out crooked and crowded teeth.

This is not just about looking better; it also helps improve your dental health.

How they look may determine how you feel about wearing them but, these days, braces can be as inconspicuous as you want.

Brackets the part of the braces that attaches to each tooth can sometimes be attached to the back of the tooth, making them less noticeable.

The brackets can be made in a wide range of different materials such as metal, ceramic or plastic.

They can also be designed to look appealing. For example, they may be clear or tooth-colored. There can also be shaped in a variety of ways like hearts and footballs or created in favorite colors.

You could even go for gold-plated braces or glow-in-the-dark retainers!

Treating facial pain and jaw problems

Chronic facial pain is a problem faced by millions of Americans.

Common symptoms can include pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth or even head and neck aches.

If you are suffering from this type of pain, your dentist can help identify its source with a thorough exam and appropriate x-rays.

Sometimes, the problem is a sinus or toothache or it could be an early stage of periodontal disease.

But for some pain, the cause is not so easily diagnosed.

There are two joints and several jaw muscles which make it possible to open and close the mouth. They work together when you chew, speak, and swallow.

These structures include muscles and ligaments, as well as the jaw bone, the mandible (lower jaw) with two joints, the TMJs.

Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working together properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder.

There are several ways the TMJ disorders may be treated.

Diagnosis is an important step before treatment.

Part of your clinical examination includes checking the joints and muscles for tenderness, clicking, popping or difficulty moving.

Your dentist may take x-rays and may make a cast of your teeth to see how your bite fits together.

To help you deal with this pain, your dentist will recommend what type of treatment you need and may refer you to a specialist.

Dental Bonding Procedure Explained

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that is used to improve the appearance of a person's teeth. It involves the application of a tooth-colored resin material to the surface of a tooth and then hardening the material using a special light. The resin material is molded and shaped to match the surrounding teeth and create a seamless, natural-looking smile.

The process of dental bonding typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth and can be completed in a single appointment. Before the bonding procedure begins, your dentist will prepare the tooth by lightly roughening the surface and applying a conditioning liquid to help the resin material adhere to the tooth.

There are many reasons why someone might choose to have dental bonding done. Some common reasons include:

  • To repair chipped, cracked or broken teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discolored or stained teeth
  • To close gaps or spaces between teeth
  • To reshape misshapen or uneven teeth
  • To make teeth look longer or to change their shape

Dental bonding is a popular choice for cosmetic dentistry because it is a relatively affordable and non-invasive option compared to other cosmetic procedures like veneers or crowns. Additionally, the bonding material can be matched to the exact shade of your existing teeth, making it a very natural-looking solution.

One of the biggest advantages of dental bonding is that it can usually be completed in just one visit to the dentist. This makes it a convenient option for people who are looking for a quick and easy way to improve the appearance of their smile.

However, it is important to note that dental bonding is not as durable as other cosmetic dental options like veneers or crowns. The bonding material can chip, stain or wear away over time and may need to be touched up or replaced after several years.

If you are considering dental bonding, it is important to consult with a qualified and experienced cosmetic dentist. They can help you determine if this option is the best choice for your individual needs and help you understand what to expect from the bonding process.

In conclusion, dental bonding is a versatile and effective cosmetic dental procedure that can help improve the appearance of your smile. Whether you are looking to repair a chipped tooth or simply want to enhance your smile, dental bonding is a great option to consider. So, if you are looking for a simple, affordable and non-invasive way to improve your smile, consider dental bonding today!

The Art of Restorative Dentistry: How to Achieve Natural-Looking Results

Restorative dentistry is a branch of dentistry that aims to restore the function and appearance of teeth that have been damaged, decayed, or lost. Whether you need a filling, a crown, a bridge, or a dental implant, the goal of restorative dentistry is to provide you with a natural-looking and long-lasting solution that blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.

But how do dentists achieve such natural-looking results? Here are some of the key factors that come into play:

  • Color matching: One of the most important aspects of restorative dentistry is color matching. Dentists use a shade guide to select the color of the restorative material that best matches your natural teeth. They may also use different shades and translucencies to mimic the variations found in natural teeth.
  • Customization: Restorative dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Each restoration is custom-made to fit your unique mouth and bite. This includes taking accurate impressions and measurements, as well as crafting the restoration in a dental laboratory.
  • Attention to detail: Restorative dentistry requires a high level of precision and attention to detail. Dentists must consider factors such as the shape, size, and position of the teeth, as well as the alignment of the bite, in order to achieve optimal results.
  • Materials: There are a variety of restorative materials available, including porcelain, composite resin, and metal alloys. Dentists will choose the material that best suits your needs and goals, taking into account factors such as durability, aesthetics, and cost.
  • Collaboration: Restorative dentistry often involves collaboration between the dentist, the dental laboratory, and other specialists, such as orthodontists or periodontists. This teamwork ensures that all aspects of the restoration are considered and that the final result is as natural-looking and functional as possible.

Restorative dentistry is truly an art form, requiring skill, expertise, and a keen eye for detail. If you are in need of restorative dental work, be sure to choose a dentist who has the training and experience necessary to achieve the natural-looking results you desire.

How Dental Implants Can Restore Your Smile and Confidence

If you have missing teeth, dental implants can be a life-changing solution that can restore your smile and confidence. Dental implants are a popular and effective option for tooth replacement because they are durable, long-lasting, and look and feel like natural teeth. Here are some of the ways that dental implants can restore your smile and confidence:

  1. Improve Appearance: Dental implants are designed to look and function like natural teeth. They are custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth, resulting in a natural-looking smile that can boost your confidence.
  2. Restore Function: Missing teeth can make it difficult to eat and speak properly, and can cause discomfort and pain. Dental implants can restore the function of your teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with ease.
  3. Preserve Bone Density: When teeth are missing, the jawbone can start to deteriorate over time. Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, preserving bone density and preventing further bone loss.
  4. Long-Lasting Solution: Dental implants are a long-lasting solution that can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Unlike dentures or bridges, which may need to be replaced or adjusted over time, dental implants provide a permanent solution that can save you time and money in the long run.
  5. Improve Self-Confidence: Missing teeth can cause embarrassment and low self-esteem. Dental implants can improve your self-confidence by restoring your smile and allowing you to feel comfortable and confident in social situations.

If you are considering dental implants, it is important to consult with a qualified dental professional to determine if they are the right solution for your dental needs. With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can restore your smile and confidence for years to come.

The secrets of avoiding gum disease as an older adult

Gum disease also known as periodontal disease often progresses slowly, without pain, over a long period of time and that's one reason it is common among older adults.

The longer the disease goes undetected and uncontrolled, the more damage it causes to gums and other supporting tissues.

Although periodontal disease is caused by plaque, other factors can increase the risk or severity of the condition, including:
– Food left between the teeth
– Tobacco use smoking and smokeless tobacco
– Badly aligned teeth
– Ill-fitting bridges or partial dentures
– Poor diet
– Systemic diseases such as anemia

Although periodontal disease is common, it can be controlled and, if caught in its early stages, it can be reversed. However, in advanced stages, it may require surgery.

Look out for the following warning signs and see your dentist if you notice any of them:
– Bleeding gums when you brush
– Red, tender or swollen gums
– Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
– Pus between your teeth and gums when the gums are pressed
– Loose teeth or teeth moving apart
– Any change in your bite
– Any change in the fit of your partial dentures
– Constant bad breath or bad taste

Keeping an eye out for these problems and having regular dental checkups can help you stop gum disease becoming a major and expensive problem.

Why its not inevitable that youll lose your teeth as you get older

Advancements in dental techniques and the increased focus on preventive dentistry means older adults are keeping their natural teeth longer than ever before.

A survey by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research showed that the rate of toothlessness in the 55 to 64 age group has dropped 60 percent since 1960.

Whatever your age, its important to practice good oral hygiene at home and to visit your dentist regularly. A few simple steps can help you maintain good oral health throughout your life.

Plaque, the sticky, colorless layer of bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease, can build up quickly on the teeth of older adults, particularly when they neglect oral hygiene. This can increase the risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease.

So its important to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaners.

Regular dental checkups are also an important part of caring for your teeth.

This can help you save your teeth and gums and prevent other dental problems. It will save you time and money in the long-run as well.

What dentists are doing to improve services for older adults

As people are living longer and enjoying good health for many years, dentists are increasingly offering improved services to recognize the special needs of older adults.

This growing segment of the population is wearing fewer dentures and they are keeping their natural teeth longer. They are also concerned to maintain good health and a great smile for many years.

However, patients in this group sometimes require special consideration because reduced mobility and dexterity may make daily oral hygiene difficult.

And certain medical conditions and impairment may make them more anxious when visiting the dentist.

For example, problems with vision or hearing loss may cause worry. Always let the dentist and staff know if you have any concerns so that they can adjust their treatment and their pace to meet your needs.

Older patients can sometimes put up with problems such as toothaches, bleeding gums and clicking dentures because they are not aware of the wide range of treatments and techniques now available.

Dentists are increasingly sensitive to the special needs of and the importance of dental health in the older patient.

As many older patients are more health conscious than ever before, regular visits to the dentist ensure their oral health is an important part of their overall health.

Different types of fillings and restorations

Nowadays, thanks to advances in dental techniques and materials, patients have a much wider range of choices when they have to repair missing, worn, damaged or decayed teeth.

For example, materials such as ceramics and polymer compounds that look more like natural teeth help dentists create pleasing, natural-looking smiles.

The traditional materials such as gold, base metal alloys and dental amalgam are still widely used as they have many advantages.

The strength and durability of traditional dental materials continues to make them useful in many situations. For example, they are good when fillings are required in the back teeth because the pressure of chewing is high in that area.

The choice of the best option will depend on several factors such as the patient’s oral and general health, where and how the filling is placed and the number of visits needed to prepare and adjust the restored tooth.

The choice about which option is best depends on each individuals needs so you should discuss the options with your dentist.

Why a dental abscess should be treated quickly

If you have any kind of swelling in your gum, it almost certainly indicates a serious infection that should be treated urgently.

Dental abscesses result from a bacterial infection in the teeth or gums.

For example, it may come from an untreated cavity. Cavities result when some of the bacteria in our mouths mix with sugars and starches in our diet to produce acid.

This acid attacks the hard enamel coating of our teeth and, as the cavity gets deeper, it eventually infects the nerve and blood supply of the tooth.

In some cases, a dental abscess is caused by an infection of the gum. Bone loss from gum disease can create a pocket between the tooth, gum and bone.

When bacteria and other debris get into this pocket, an abscess can form.

The treatment for an abscess depends on how severe the infection is.

If the abscess has been caused by decay, root canal treatment may be needed or the tooth may even have to be removed.

If the abscess has been caused by the gum, the gum will need deep cleaning or surgical treatment. Again the tooth may need to be removed.

Sometimes, a small incision may be made into the gum to drain the abscess. If this happens, antibiotics and pain medication may be used to relieve discomfort.

If you wait until the gum is severely swollen before seeking treatment, the situation can become very serious.

The abscess at this stage can prevent you breathing properly and can be life-threatening.

So if you have any signs of swelling in your gum, contact your dentist immediately.

How sugar in your diet affects your teeth

The sugar content in the food you eat has a big effect on your teeth and gums.

When bacteria (plaque) come into contact with sugar in the mouth, acid is produced, which attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more. This can eventually result in tooth decay.

That's why drinking sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks, and non-nutritious snacks can take a toll on teeth.

This is particularly true for children as their eating patterns and food choices affect how quickly they develop tooth decay.

Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay. However, almost all foods, including milk or vegetables, have some type of sugar. Many of them also contain important nutrients that are an important part in our diet.

To help control the amount of sugar you consume, read food labels and choose foods and beverages that are low in added sugars. Soft drinks, candy, cookies and pastries often contain added sugars.

How sedation and general anesthesia can make your visit to the dentist easier

While local anesthetics are often used in dental treatment, there is sometimes a need for anti-anxiety agents – such as nitrous oxide – or sedatives to help people relax during dental visits.

Dentists may use these agents to induce “minimal or moderate sedation”.

In this case, the patient reaches a relaxed state during treatment but can respond to speech or touch.

Sedatives can be administered before, during or after dental procedures by mouth, inhalation or injection.

More complex treatments may require drugs that can induce “deep sedation”.

This reduces consciousness and causes a loss of feeling which helps to reduce both pain and anxiety.

Sometimes patients undergo “general anesthesia” where the drugs lead to a temporary loss of consciousness.

A dentist may recommend deep sedation or general anesthesia for certain procedures with children or with adults who have severe anxiety or for people who have difficulty controlling their movements.

While these techniques to control pain and anxiety are used to treat tens of millions of patients safely every year, its important that you let your dentist know anything that might affect your ability to benefit from them for example, tell them about any illnesses or health conditions, whether you are taking any medications and if you’ve had any problems with allergic reactions to medications.

Why cavities aren’t just for kids

Tooth decay or cavities result from destruction of the tooth enamel and can lead to a range of problems from toothache to bad breath.

Cavities occur when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, sugared drinks, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth.

Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

Many people associate cavities with children but the changes that occur with aging make cavities an adult problem, too.

Recession of the gums away from the teeth, combined with an increased incidence of gum disease, can expose tooth roots to plaque.

Tooth roots are covered with cementum, a softer tissue than enamel. They are susceptible to decay and are more sensitive to touch and to hot and cold. The majority of people over age 50 have tooth-root decay.

Decay around the edges of fillings is also common to older adults. As many of them did not benefit from fluoride and modern preventive dental care when they were younger, they often have a number of dental fillings.

Over the years, these fillings may weaken, fracture and leak around the edges.

Bacteria accumulate in these tiny crevices causing acid to build up which leads to decay.

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:

– Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
– Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaner
– Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking

Its also worth asking your dentist about supplemental fluoride, which strengthens your teeth, and about dental sealants, a plastic protective coating which is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay.

In addition, its important to visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral examination.

Some tips on overcoming nerves when going to the dentist

Some people get a bit nervous about the idea of going to the dentist.

As a result of the major progress that has been made in diagnosis and treatment, the process gets more comfortable all the time. So you may be worrying unnecessarily.

But, if you’re in any way tense or anxious, tell your dentist and the dental staff.

They will understand and will be able to adapt the treatment to your needs.

It can also help if you choose a time for your dental visit when you’re less likely to be rushed or under pressure. Dashing out from a busy day at work may make you feel more stressed.

For many people, that means making an early-morning  appointment helps a great deal.

There are also other steps than can help. If the sound of the drill bothers you, take a portable audio player and headset so you can listen to your favorite music.

You can also help to relax by simply visualizing yourself somewhere you feel relaxed.

Sometimes these simple steps can help you feel a lot better. So why not give it a try on your next visit?
